Indian Summer School on Cellular Automata 2026

Welcome to Sixth Indian Summer School on Cellular Automata

logo

Indian Summer School on Cellular Automata is a flagship event of the Cellular Automata India. Its aim is to promote cellular automata research in India, as well as the other parts of the world. This is the sixth edition of the summer school, which will be conducted in two phases – the learning phase and the research phase. The learning phase of this year’s summer school is co-located with the Workshop on Logic and Automata: Cultivating the Roots of Computing, to be held at IIEST, Shibpur during June 1-5, 2026. The workshop will have courses on cellular automata and related topics, as well as the facility of hands-on training. Although the learning of cellular automata can be done online, we encourage the participants to attend the workshop offline for classroom teaching and in-person interaction with the mentors. We are intended to move to offline organisation of summer school in future.

The learning phase

In the previous editions of the summer school, classes on cellular automata had been conducted online. This year we shall conduct only offline classes. However, there will be provision of attending those classes online. Following are the key points of this phase.

The research phase

The participants of the summer school have to be engaged in a research project.

The projects: The project topics are to be proposed by the participants, based on the topics covered in the talks (or related topics). This will be given as a task at the beginning, and the participants have to submit the project proposal. The participants may see the projects of the previous years’ summer schools for getting an idea of the project topics. A (detailed) discussion will take place between the mentors and participants to finalise the project topics. The mentors may insist on some topics during the discussion, if required. For the offline participants, the discussion will take place after completion of offline classes. For online participants, such a discussion will take place after the test. Accordingly, the projects and mentors of the projects will be finalised.

Progress report: At the end of the first one month (last week of June, 2026), the participants have to present the progress of their project work through oral presentation. The participants will have an exit option at this stage.

Final report: The participants will present their complete work at the end of the school. The preferred time is the end of July (or, at the very beginning of August). As per the tradition of the summer school, the participants are expected to write a paper based on their work for submission in ASCAT 2027 or in some other venues.

Extension: If required, the school may be extended for another month for completion of the projects.
